What to expect on your first visit

The Osteopath will take a full case history, involving your presenting complaint, questions on your general health, lifestyle and past medical history.

This is followed by a physical examination, when the osteopath will assess you. They will then arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan. Normally 3 to 6 treatments should be sufficient to alleviate the presenting symptoms.

What does treatment involve?

Techniques employed, depending on the patient may involve massage, stretching and manipulation. In general the treatment does not hurt, there may be aching afterwards, especially if the problem is severe or longstanding. This normally subsides very quickly.

What is the difference between an Osteopath and a Chiropractor?

Chiropractic treatment is based primarily on manipulation of the spine whereas osteopathic treatment employs a wider range of techniques overall such as stretching, massage, pressure and mobilisation. Osteopaths have a holistic approach to their patients and treat the underlying cause not just the symptoms.

Osteopathic treatment normally means that the patient needs fewer treatments and gets better faster, since we are treating the cause not just the symptoms.
